Tomorrow is the BIG Day!

I can't wait to see all of you tomorrow for our first day of school! We have P.E., so don't forget to wear your sneakers. Also, it will be very hot! Bring a water bottle to school and you can keep it at your seat to stay hydrated. We have a late lunch this year, feel free to bring a snack. Get lots of rest tonight and eat a good breakfast in the morning. We are going to have a fantastic year!!!

Read the “Weekly News” on Fridays 

*We rate your child’s performance for the week and list missing assignments on the Weekly News. The Weekly New will always be sent home on Fridays. If you do not see one, please investigate.  

Read your child’s emails 

*Throughout the week, students may receive e-mails about assignments, directions, and links that they will need to read. Also, monitor e-mails that come from peers. E-mail content should always be purposeful and appropriate. Please bring any issues to our attention.  

*The students will be learning “e-mail etiquette”. You can help your child make sure that all correspondence is appropriate.  

Check your child’s take-home folder 

*Paper homework assignments (including Weekly News) come home in this folder 

*Graded assignments come home in this folder (some need to be signed) 

*Important notices come home in this folder 

Practice, Practice, Practice! 

*Make sure your child reads for at least 20 minutes every night. Like any skill, the only way to improve is to practice regularly. Check the “Reading Homework Information” tab on Mrs. Carr’s blog for a list of questions to ask your child after they read to monitor comprehension.  

Reading Homework Information

Reading logs are given to students on Mondays and need to be returned on Fridays. You will receive a Dojo message if your child turned in their HW. If they need extra time, they can use the weekend and turn it in on Monday. You will receive a message on Monday if they turned it in after the weekend.

Below is a description of what is expected each night for students and parents/guardians!

Student Expectations:

Mondays-Thursdays:

*Students read an appropriately leveled book for at least 20 minutes and fill out their reading log. Please note that ALL sections of the log need to be filled in (this includes date, title, and recording if they completed a book at home).

Fridays: Student logs are DUE! The log counts as FOUR homework assignments.

Parent/Guardian Expectations:

 *Parents need to sign their child’s reading log each night AFTER they have checked in on their comprehension. Parents should ask students for a short summary of what they read. Additionally, parents should ask their child how they are progressing towards their monthly reading goals. If you would like to know exactly how many books your child has completed, I will be keeping track throughout the year. 

            As a parent, I am aware of how busy life can get. If you have a crazy night, please don’t stress about homework. Just let me know by writing directly on the HW or you can send me an e-mail. J Your child can always read extra on another night or over the weekend and turn in their log on Monday. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Book Club: Session 8

Today was our final meeting of the summer! We discussed the ending of the book, our favorite parts (most suspenseful, scariest, surprising, saddest, happiest), and if we thought Peter Brown would write a third robot novel based on how the book concluded. Next, it was time to celebrate! Each student was presented with a certificate for completing the book and our work in book club. We also ate a yummy donut breakfast while using sidewalk talk to draw our favorite scenes from the book. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time with your kiddos this summer. What a fantastic, hardworking group! Keep Reading!!!

Book Club: Session 7

We started our meeting today by predicting how the book will end....we are SO close! Next, we set up literacy centers around the library to work with the text in different ways. Students worked on point of view, setting, theme, story arcs, summarizing, and even wrote a poem based on the story. The literacy centers allowed us to revisit the skills we worked on throughout the course of our book club this summer.

This group LOVES art. We decided to do another guided drawing activity with Mr. Carr to finish up our session this morning! 

Thursday will be our final book club meeting of the summer! We will be having a celebration to reward all of the students' hard work. We can't wait! Below you will find our final reading assignment....Happy Reading!

Book Club: Session 6

We started our meeting by finishing our Roz camouflage projects from Tuesday. Our discussion today focused on the course of action Roz and Brightbill took as they escaped Shadow and took off across the bay. Students were given the opportunity to think about what course of action they would take if they were in Roz's shoes.

Next, we worked on our comprehension by playing "Robot Memory". The students had to match the cause and the effect of different events from the chapters we read. What a fun way to test our understanding!!
