Book Club: Session 5

Roz and Brightbill are on their way back to the island! The chapters we read over the weekend were intense....Roz and Brightbill encountered so many obstacles! We began today's meeting with a "Roz Q&A". Students came up with at least two comprehension questions to ask the group during our discussion.

Our skill focus was identifying themes developing in the story. Theme is a message or lesson in the text. Ask yourself, what big idea is the author trying to convey through their words? We went over some examples and then the students played "Save the Last Word for Me". This game involved students first identifying a theme and two pieces of supporting text evidence on their own. Each student was assigned a letter (A, B, or C). Next, students were placed into groups and we called our a letter. If a student's letter was called, they had to share their theme and the other group members found text evidence to support it. When we said "last word", the student who shared the theme gave their supporting evidence and had the "final say". This was a fun way for students to hear from each other while working on a literary skill!

In the chapters we read over the weekend, Roz has to adjust her camouflage depending on the environment as she travels with Brightbill. Students picked an environment out of a hat (forest, highway, farm, town, mountains, meadows) and had to camouflage Roz accordingly. You can see some of our awesome work below!

Here is our next assignment for Thursday! Happy Reading!
